Coastal and Marine Institute Laboratory Summer Research Program
I am the founder and director of the Coastal and Marine Institute Laboratory Summer Research Program for community college students at San Diego State University. I put together this program to facilitate a partnership between our marine laboratory and San Diego-area community colleges, to increase marine science research opportunities for community college students. Many community college students pursue STEM degrees, and yet often they have fewer opportunities to participate in research compared with their colleagues at 4-year universities. Check out the video made by San Diego Mesa College about our program here:

University of Vermont Watershed Alliance
At the University of Vermont (UVM), I worked as an educator for the UVM Watershed Alliance, which is an extension group with a mission of providing educational programming focused on stream monitoring, watershed dynamics, and environmental stewardship to local classrooms K-12 students.
As an educator, I traveled to classrooms across the state of Vermont, meeting class groups at stream sites to teach them about how scientists monitor stream health, such as through identifying stream insects, measuring stream velocity and clarity, and quantifying composition of important chemicals like oxygen and carbon dioxide.

University Teaching
Through teaching, I hope to inspire students to become interested in a career in science, and to discover the amazing diversity of life in our oceans. During fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters, I was a Teaching Assistant for BIOL 354 Ecology & the Environment at San Diego State University. I led multiple class sections totaling more than 100 students. During Spring 2023, I was the primary instructor for BIOL 354L Experimental Ecology, leading a course with multiple field trips designed to teach students how to do ecology.
NSF GRFP Application Workshop Leader
In the fall of 2019, I led a workshop to help graduate students apply for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program. Feel free to contact me if you are a graduate student applying for the fellowship - I am happy to share advice and my application materials with interested students.
Letters to a Pre-scientist
I participate in a program, Letters to a Pre-Scientist, which links scientists around the world to students through letter-writing. I highly recommend getting involved! Check out their program here: https://www.prescientist.org/
